Application Guidelines and Instructions
The School of International Service is pleased to announce the fourth annual competition for study abroad
scholarships funded by the School. Approximately ten (10) awards of up to approximately $1,650 each will
be given to SIS graduate students who can demonstrate scholastic achievement, a commitment to global
service, strong motivation for studying abroad, and financial need, and who will be participating in a SIS
Summer Abroad 2013 Program in South Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia, Israel, Cuba, Brussels, Geneva, and Azerbaijan. Each award will be used to offset the cost of attendance at one of these programs. Applications will be judged on a number of criteria as detailed below.
Application deadline: Monday, March 4, 2013.
Eligibility:
Be a SIS graduate student in good standing with a GPA of at least a 3.30
Be accepted into a SIS Summer Abroad 2013 Program
Award Criteria:
1. Scholastic achievement
High academic achievement. Students receiving the award must have at minimum a cumulative "B+"
average (3.30 GPA).
2. Demonstrated commitment to advancing global service and/or improving international
relations
Active involvement in internships, professional positions, clubs, committees, community service, and
other activities that embody the SIS commitment to promoting human peace and improving
international relations. Preference will be given to students who intend to implement a service or
professional project based on their SIS Summer Abroad experience.
3. Strong motivation for participation in SIS Summer Abroad Program
Academic or professional interest in the region of the selected program and ability to demonstrate how
the program will contribute to personal, professional, and academic development. Preference will be
given to students who have not been or studied abroad before.
4. AU faculty recommendation
Positive recommendation from an instructor at AU.
5. Financial need
Evidence of financial need. Students are required to disclose any financial aid (loans, scholarships,
fellowships, etc…) that they are applying to their degree at AU.

Application Materials:
1. Student information form – Via e-mail
2. Statement of motivation addressing the award selection criteria (at least 500 words) – Via e-mail
3. Statement of finances indicating how the student pays for classes (limited to 100 words) – Via E-mail
4. Résumé – Via E-mail
5. AU transcript (unofficial or official) – Via E-mail
6. AU faculty recommendation – In hardcopy or Via E-mail from the faculty member
Application Process and Deadlines:
1. Apply to a SIS Summer Abroad 2013 Program by the Program’s application deadline.
2. Submit a separate application for the scholarship by the scholarship application deadline. Some
items will be accepted ONLY via e-mail; the AU faculty recommendation form may be submitted in
hard copy, or electronically directly from the faculty member.
3. Submit completed application VIA E-MAIL to:
