Swiss scholarships for university studies
To a limited extent, scholarships are also offered for postgraduate studies at the Universities of Applied Sciences. This applies to the group of Western (AP-1) and Central and Eastern European countries (AP-2) included in the scholarship pool. Students must have graduated from a university or university of applied sciences with at least a Bachelor Degree and enrol in Switzerland for studies at post-graduate level. This offer applies for the seven universities of applied sciences, not including teaching colleges. In the field of the arts (design/music), the conditions for arts students relating to the country offer apply (see below).
This program is valid only for studies in Switzerland. It is not valid for on-the-job studies, part-time studies or correspondence courses.
In the framework of a special allocation, scholarships for advanced arts students (without fixed distribution by country) are offered to the best applicants who are already at an advanced stage of their training. This offer is restricted to those countries which are listed under AR, AP-1 and BR-1.
The scholarships are offered in principle to foreign governments. The applications have to be submitted for a preliminary selection to the national institution in charge and the Swiss diplomatic representation in the student's country of origin. The Swiss diplomatic representation will thereupon forward the pre-selected applications to the FCS for definitive selection. Finally the Federal Department of Home Affairs awards scholarships on the advice of the FCS.
As part of a special allocation, the Swiss Government provides a number of additional scholarships to postgraduates from Central and Eastern European countries (pool system, no fixed number of scholarships for each country).

Ph.D.-student position in the Solid State Physics - U twente, NL
University of Twente.
The research of SSP is an integral part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. Well-defined morphological patterns and functional patterned molecular coatings will be studied to improve control of the wettability of surfaces. Both the macroscopic and microscopic features of such structures and their collaborative effects will be studied. The molecular coatings for wetting control will be applied by two different techniques, microcontact printing and shadow-mask evaporation. Both the influence of the length scale and the anisotropy of the patterns on the macroscopic wettability are of interest. The combination of length scales in the micron range with those in the nanometer range is promising for gaining improved wettability control, especially in gradient patterned surfaces. Nanometer sized structure will be implemented by means of ion beam induced erosion, both in 0D (dots) and 1D (stripes).
This project aims at a fundamental investigation of the interrelationships between roughness and functional coating. The laboratory scale experiments will be performed with mainly optical tools (ADSA-P and interference microscopy), combined with high-resolution microscopy (AFM and possibly LEEM). The findings are thought to be relevant for application in high-tech printing technology.

PhD in Morphogenesis-EMBL Heidelberg, Germany
The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe maintains a cylindrical shape by alternating polarized growth at the cell ends with divisions in the middle. The localized growth is established during interphase by bundles of microtubules that deposit growth factors specifically at cell ends. The bundles are also attached to the nucleus, keeping it near the cell-center. This is because bundles are anti-parallel, align along the main cell axis and transmit the microtubule polymerization forces from both sides to the nucleus. We have modelled the nucleus and microtubules with simulated Langevin dynamics in three dimensions. We could match most of the experimentally measured microtubule features, using a fix cylindrical cell shape.
We propose now to study how S. pombe determines its shape. The student will have to extend the existing model to include abitrary convex shapes. He/her will have to model the transport and deposition of growth factors by the microtubules, and their effects on cell growth. The work will be done in collaboration with Damian Brunner (EMBL). Together, we will test the model using fluorescence recordings of both wild type and mutant cells followed on multiple generations. The proposed work is a systems' level approach of morphogenesis in a simple cell, and the student will combine experiments and theory during his/her PhD.
Applicants with prior training in Physics, Mathematics, I.T. or engineering, and a willingness to explore the opportunities offered in Biology are encouraged to apply. EMBL is a renowned international research laboratory, with more than 60 nationalities represented. The working language is English.
The deadline for application is November 1st, 2006.

VLIR Scholarships (2007-2008)- Belgium
Headlines from the brochure NEW There are a number of important changes compared to last year: Content Submission and handling of applications International Courses (ICP) and 15 ICPs and 6 ITPs VLIR finances 15 International Courses (ICPs) organised by the Flemish universities. These courses are master programmes, lasting one or two academic years, all of which lead to a master’s degree. They focus on specific problems of developing countries. The main target group for the courses are students from developing countries, although the courses can also be attended by Belgian students or students from other countries. The ICPs aim to train people from the South with a responsible position in civil society (at a university, school, NGO, ministry, etc) in such a way that the knowledge that they acquire is disseminated and applied in the home institution and country of origin. VLIR also finances International Training Programmes (ITPs) organised by Flemish universities and one university college. ITPs are short-term training programmes whose main focus is transferring skills rather than knowledge. The International Training Programmes are designed for people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience. Knowledge and skills are transferred through the ITPs, and the possibility for cooperation and networking is created. VLIR is responsible for the offer of ICPs and ITPs. It provides funds to the organising Flemish universities and also provides a number of scholarships for each programme. The Flemish universities themselves are responsible for the programmes’ academic content, and practical and logistical organisation. Although they primarily address the needs of students and professionals from developing countries, these programmes are also open to other people. This brochure provides all the information you may need as a self-supporting student or as scholar. 180 ICP scholarships and 70 ITP scholarships With the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation, every year VLIR awards scholarships to students from developing countries to find a place on one of the 15 ICPs or 6 ITPs. Each year, up to 180 scholarships are available to first-year ICP students and up to 70 scholarships to ITP participants. Country of origin Only residents of developing countries on the VLIR’s List of Developing Countries are eligible for a scholarship. Other admission requirements refer to: age; education, professional experience, motivation, language, gender, financial resources. Please consult the brochure for detailed information on admission requirements, practical information and application procedure. | ||

Graduate Student Position at KTH
The general objective of the project is to develop an open knowledge environment for self-configurable, low-cost and robust robot swarms usable in everyday applications. Advances in the state-of-the art of networked robotics are proposed through introduction of a local and global knowledge base using ontology and semantic for ad hoc communication within a low-cost swarm of autonomous robots operating in the surrounding smart IT infrastructure. The work will address the development of flexible, cost-effective, dependable, and user-driven robot swarms, which possess a higher intelligence collectively than each member of the swarm independently. The project`s part covered by the position includes work on universal semantically machine understandable representation and communication format, global robotic Web services, coordination and decision making.
The appointment will be full time for an initial duration of 24 months, with the possibility of renewal. It will include 80% research and 20% teaching assistance or other department duties.
Required Qualifications
A master or equivalent degree in computer science or a strongly related area is required. Knowledge of Semantic Web, Ontology, Web services and agent technology is desirable. To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.
