International Fellowship Scholarship Program for Women - USA

International Fellowships scholarship are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported.

Six of the awards are available to members of International Federation of University Women affiliate organizations. These fellowship recipients may study in any country other than their own.

* All supporting documents must also be postmarked by this date. If an application postmark deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, supporting documents may be postmarked the next business day. The Foundation also awards several annual Home Country Project Grants ($5,000 to $7,000 each) to women who received AAUW Educational Foundation International Fellowships between 2001 and 2006. These grants support community-based projects designed to improve the lives of women and girls in the fellow`s home country.

Eligibility
Please note: AAUW members are not eligible to apply for International Fellowships.

• You must be a citizen in a country other than the United States, or you must hold a nonimmigrant visa if you reside in the United States.
• You must complete an academic degree equivalent to a bachelor`s degree from a U.S. college or university by Sept. 1, 2006.
• You must intend to devote yourself full time to your proposed academic plan during the fellowship year.
• You must intend to return to your home country to pursue a professional career. You must be proficient in English. Unless you can verify that your native language is English or that you received your undergraduate degree from or will have completed one semester of full-time study in your discipline at a university in the United States by Sept. 1, 2006, you must submit a recent score (no older than October 2003) on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Transcripts must be submitted by Jan. 10, 2006, for verification. The minimum acceptable score is 550 for the paper-based TOEFL and 213 for the computer-based test. Test scores must reach the Foundation no later than April 1, 2007.
• You must have applied by December 2006, to an accredited institution of study for the period of the fellowship year and must indicate the name of that institution in the International Fellowship application. The institution you plan to attend must be located in the United States unless you are a member of an organization affiliated with IFUW.
• You must be a member of an organization affiliated with the International Association of University Women (IFUW) to be considered for one of six fellowships awarded for study in any country other than your own country.

Criteria for Selection
A panel of scholars appointed by the AAUW Educational Foundation Board of Directors reviews all applications. Final award selections are made by the Foundation board. In selecting fellowship recipients, the following will be considered:

• Academic and professional qualifications
• The need of the applicant`s country for the specialized knowledge and skills that she plans to acquire
• Applicant`s commitment to the advancement of women and girls in her home country as demonstrated by her previous work and her proposed study or research
• Documented evidence of prior community or civic service in the home country, particularly activities that contributed to the improvement of the lives of women and girls
• Quality and feasibility of the proposed plan of study or research and proposed time schedule
• Planned or confirmed place of work after returning to home country
• English proficiency
• Financial need
• Country of residence at the time of application (preference will be given to women who reside in their home country at the time of application)

Swiss scholarships for university studies

Through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), the Swiss Government grants foreign students university scholarships (Swiss universities, Federal Institutes of Technology). These scholarships are offered on the basis of reciprocity (fixed number of scholarships for each country) or within the frame of a scholarship pool (scholarships without fixed distribution by country). They are intended for students who have graduated from university (postgraduates) and who, by staying in Switzerland, will be able to further their education and to undertake research work in the fields in which the Swiss universities are particularly active.

To a limited extent, scholarships are also offered for postgraduate studies at the Universities of Applied Sciences. This applies to the group of Western (AP-1) and Central and Eastern European countries (AP-2) included in the scholarship pool. Students must have graduated from a university or university of applied sciences with at least a Bachelor Degree and enrol in Switzerland for studies at post-graduate level. This offer applies for the seven universities of applied sciences, not including teaching colleges. In the field of the arts (design/music), the conditions for arts students relating to the country offer apply (see below).

This program is valid only for studies in Switzerland. It is not valid for on-the-job studies, part-time studies or correspondence courses.

In the framework of a special allocation, scholarships for advanced arts students (without fixed distribution by country) are offered to the best applicants who are already at an advanced stage of their training. This offer is restricted to those countries which are listed under AR, AP-1 and BR-1.

The scholarships are offered in principle to foreign governments. The applications have to be submitted for a preliminary selection to the national institution in charge and the Swiss diplomatic representation in the student's country of origin. The Swiss diplomatic representation will thereupon forward the pre-selected applications to the FCS for definitive selection. Finally the Federal Department of Home Affairs awards scholarships on the advice of the FCS.

As part of a special allocation, the Swiss Government provides a number of additional scholarships to postgraduates from Central and Eastern European countries (pool system, no fixed number of scholarships for each country).

Ph.D.-student position in the Solid State Physics - U twente, NL

We offer a Ph.D.-student position in the Solid State Physics group (SSP) of the
University of Twente.

The research of SSP is an integral part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. Well-defined morphological patterns and functional patterned molecular coatings will be studied to improve control of the wettability of surfaces. Both the macroscopic and microscopic features of such structures and their collaborative effects will be studied. The molecular coatings for wetting control will be applied by two different techniques, microcontact printing and shadow-mask evaporation. Both the influence of the length scale and the anisotropy of the patterns on the macroscopic wettability are of interest. The combination of length scales in the micron range with those in the nanometer range is promising for gaining improved wettability control, especially in gradient patterned surfaces. Nanometer sized structure will be implemented by means of ion beam induced erosion, both in 0D (dots) and 1D (stripes).

This project aims at a fundamental investigation of the interrelationships between roughness and functional coating. The laboratory scale experiments will be performed with mainly optical tools (ADSA-P and interference microscopy), combined with high-resolution microscopy (AFM and possibly LEEM). The findings are thought to be relevant for application in high-tech printing technology.

Requirements:
For this position, we are searching for enthusiastic candidates with a recent Masters degree in experimental or applied physics, physical chemistry or a related discipline, and with a strong desire to investigate uncharted waters. Preferably, you have some previous experience related to the research topic. Knowledge of the standard experimental techniques used in this work, i.e. optical and scanning probe microscopy, is desirable.

Employment:
We offer an interesting temporary research position in a dynamic, interdisciplinary and international environment. You will be appointed for a period of one year, with an assessment within one year. A positive assessment will secure the continuation of the appointment for another three years. The salary starts at €1.933,- gross per month increasing to €2.472,- gross per month in the fourth year. PhD students are expected to complete their research with a thesis. PhD Studentship Institute of Petroleum Engineering -UK

The Intelligent Well systems Technology group is looking for a PhD student to work in the area of modelling and evaluation of advanced downhole hardware used in hydrocarbon production. The studentship is available to UK/EU/Overseas candidates. It includes fees and an appropriate stipend. The Institute is committed to equality of opportunity.

The successful candidate will be involved in development of software tools for optimising the operation of downhole equipment. This will be done through assessing efficiency of various optimization algorithms with respect to problem of optimal settings for interval control valves and fine tuning of the best algorithms. The group is funded by a number of Upstream Oil Industry operating and service companies. They evaluate the progress of the work via regular meetings held in Edinburgh at four monthly intervals. Applicants will typically already be in possession of a MSc. degree in Mathematics or Physics with an outstanding academic or research record. Familiarity with the MATLAB and/or Simulink computing environments, knowledge of Artificial Intelligence will be an advantage, as will be previous practical experience in the optimization of industrial processes. A Petroleum Engineering background will also be useful, but is not essential since suitable training course can be provided as required.
