VLIR-UOS scholarship - Belgium

Application and selection procedure

Applicants applying both for academic admission and for a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.

Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship, simply need to consider the admission requirements from the host university where the programme is organised.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection but relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the country are the most important academic selection criteria. The academic admission requirements are specific for every programme. Consult the requirements from the programme you choose at the list of programmes of ITPs and ICPs.

The scholarship selection is carried out by a joint selection commission of VLIR-UOS and the host university. The host university – not the applicant! – forwards the applications for a scholarship to the VLIR-UOS secretariat after the academic admission. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria are taken into consideration. These criteria consist of, on the one hand, qualification criteria which need to be fulfilled in any case by all scholarship applicants and, on the other hand, of selection criteria that are evaluated by the selection committee. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria can be found in a download at the bottom of this page.

All applicants will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of their application. Applicants, who are accepted both academically and for the scholarship, will be contacted by e-mail by VLIR-UOS and the host university at the latest on 15 March 2009. Applicants who are not selected academically will be informed by the host university. All other applicants will be informed by VLIR-UOS in May 2009.

This is how you apply

1. Choose one ITP or one ICP you wish to apply for. Notice that you can apply for only one ITP or one ICP for the coming academic year, so choose carefully! You cannot increase your chances by trying to apply for more than one programme, as the system will not allow you to apply for more than one programme. Should you try to apply for more than one programme, your data will appear more than once in our central database and all your applications will be inadmissible;

2. Fill in your data in the tool provided on this website, at the bottom of the page that gives more information about the programme you choose to apply for from the list of programmes of ITPs and ICPs;

3. Upon completion of the input of your data, you will automatically receive an e-mail with a link to the correct application form from the host university that is organising the programme you choose;

4. Applications should no longer be sent to the VLIR-UOS Scholarship Office. They should be sent directly to the host university where the programme is organised. Applications sent to VLIR-UOS will not be considered;

5. The application form, together with all required documents (instructions can be found on the application form from the host university), should reach the admission office from the host university where the chosen programme is organised before 1 February 2009;

6. Applications that are incomplete, illegible or that reach the admission office from the host university after the deadline will be automatically rejected.

UCLA: Fellowships and Grants for Entering Graduate Students

Most fellowship and grant awards are for one academic year (three terms or two semesters). Entering students may, however, receive offers covering all the years of study through degree attainment. Some federally funded awards provide additional summer coverage. Departmental fellowships and grants are awarded in varying amounts and may include fees and nonresident tuition. Awards are competitive and open to all graduate students. Recipients of fellowships, traineeships and grants must maintain satisfactory progress throughout their tenure. They must be registered and enrolled each quarter for a minimum of 12 units and are expected to devote full-time to study and research.

UCLA seeks to achieve a student body and faculty which is inclusive of individuals from all cultural, linguistic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our commitment to academic excellence places a high value on sustaining the diversity of experience and perspective which is critical in promoting lively intellectual exchange and the breadth of new ideas that are essential for creative research and scholarship.

Some of our available fellowship funding (specifically the Eugene V. Cota-Robles Fellowship and Graduate Opportunity Fellowship programs) is intended to help ensure access to graduate study for students who have experienced significant socioeconomic disadvantages or overcome other major educational or physical disadvantages in their pursuit of higher education. All qualified applications will be considered for these fellowships without regard to gender, color, race, ethnicity or national origin.

Graduate Division Fellowships and Programs

Eugene V. Cota-Robles Fellowship This four-year fellowship program, funded by the University of California Office of the President and the UCLA Graduate Division, supports a limited number of students who are entering PhD programs and are interested in a career in college or university teaching and research. The fellowship currently provides a stipend of $18,000 plus standard registration fees and nonresident tuition (for the first year only) if necessary. During the student's second, third or fourth year, the Graduate Division provides a second year of support in the form of a Graduate Research Mentorship Award upon activation of the award by the student and the department. The student's department is obligated to provide two or more years of equivalent support. Applicants must be nominated by their department/school. Students pursuing MD or DDS degrees are not eligible for this program.

Applicants must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents and should demonstrate high potential and promise. Individuals from cultural, racial, linguistic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in graduate education are especially encouraged to participate in the program. The intent of this fellowship is to provide access to higher education for students who might otherwise find it difficult or impossible to successfully pursue graduate study. Applicants must complete both the Fellowship Application for Entering Graduate Students and the Diversity Fellowships - Supplemental Application. These forms, along with your Admission Application's Statement of Purpose essay on your contributions to the University's diversity mission, will be reviewed as part of your fellowship application.

Graduate Opportunity Fellowship Program (GOFP) This one-year fellowship program provides recipients with a $12,500 stipend plus standard registration fees (and nonresident tuition if necessary). The program supports a limited number of entering students pursuing either terminal or professional master's degrees. Students pursuing doctoral degrees (e.g., PhD, MD, DDS, etc.) are not eligible for funding. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Individuals from cultural, racial, linguistic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in graduate education are especially encouraged to apply. Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars were elected in 1904.

American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. Through 2004, applicants from more than 300 American colleges and universities had been selected as Rhodes Scholars. In most years, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution which has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

Intellectual distinction is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for election to a Rhodes Scholarship. Selection committees are charged to seek excellence in qualities of mind and in qualities of person which, in combination, offer the promise of effective service to the world in the decades ahead. The Rhodes Scholarships, in short, are investments in individuals rather than in project proposals. Accordingly, applications are sought from talented students without restriction as to their field of academic specialization or career plans although the proposed course of study must be available at Oxford, and the applicant's undergraduate program must provide a sufficient basis for further study in the proposed field. Through the years, Rhodes Scholars have pursued studies in all of the varied fields available at the University of Oxford.

Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the Scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

Cited from: http://www.google.com/anitaborg-europe/

Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Vacant PhD positions, Surface Technology & Tribology group, Dept of Engineering Technology, Univ of Twente, the Netherlands

PhD Studentship #01

Tribology of Fiber Reinforced Elastomers and Thermoplastics
- Sustainable Elastomers & Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber Reinforcement -

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students and is the Netherlands' only campus university.

The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project "Sustainable Elastomers and Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber Reinforcement".

Relatively new short-cut aramid-fiber/elastomer composites show considerably improved tribological properties, in particular cut, ship and chunk resistance in truck tire treads. In addition, the hysteretic properties of aramid-fiber reinforced rubber are greatly reduced, which can immediately be translated in lower rolling resistance of tires and energy or fuel savings of cars equipped with short-cut fiber reinforced tires. Short-cut fiber reinforced tires are therefore very interesting as valuable contributions to a sustainable world.

Important prerequisites for the improvement in properties of the polymers with the aramid fibers are a strong adhesion between fiber and polymeric substrate, respectively a favorable fiber orientation must be established during processing, in order to prevent anisotropy in friction and wear properties. Unfortunately, there are no general controls and experiences available how short-cut fiber reinforced polymers of all sorts need to be designed with respect to their tribological properties for specific applications.

Aim of the project is to develop scientific understanding and generic models for further development of improved short-cut fiber reinforced polymers, thermoplastic and elastomeric. Reliable tribology test methods, against different materials (e.g. metals and asphalt) will be used in combination with state-of-the-art analytical characterization techniques like SEM, TEM and surface analysis. Experimental investigations will be carried out in parallel with the development of models to describe tribological properties, such as friction and wear, on a micro scale, again in relation to the fiber-matrix adhesion and mean fiber orientation.

This PhD opportunity will suit a person with a degree in physical sciences (physics, engineering, materials science, etc.).

You will be based at the Laboratory for Surface Technology and Tribology of the University of Twente and be joining an innovative and diverse group working on Tribology, Surface Technology and Materials. For more information on the research group visit www.tr.ctw.utwente.nl

PhD studentship #02

Mechanical and thermal activated self healing surfaces made of composite ceramics for mechanical components
SELFSURF

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students and is the Netherlands' only campus university.

The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project "Mechanical and thermal activated self healing surfaces made of composite ceramics for mechanical components".

Project
The project is part of a national program on self healing materials financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. Self healing materials are recognized as a new class of engineering materials with the capacity to more or less autonomously repair internal damage.
Oxide ceramics have large potential to be applied in technological applications for their high temperature stability and erosion / corrosion resistance. An important limitation for application is a high coefficient of friction when in contact with a countersurface. Besides that a high coefficient of friction does result in energy losses, it also increases the risk of crack growth, originating from the surface. When oxide ceramics, like Al2O3 and ZrO2 and their composites (ZTA and ADZ), are doped with CuO, it is very interesting to observe that a very thin CuO layer is present on the surface after sintering and machining. Previous research has shown that this thin layer is self – healing when a countersurface is sliding over the surface. The project is focusing on further experimental investigation and modelling of this mechanism, a first application of the developed materials in valve seats of engines as well as optimizing the microstructure for specific applications.

Currently, a Postdoc is working on the project for about half a year. His main task is modelling of mass transport responsible for the layer formation. In the beginning of the PhD project a close cooperation and transfer of knowledge with the Postdoc will take place.

The PhD research comprises experimental preparation and characterisation of the samples as well as further modelling of the contact and self healing behaviour of the surface layer. The focus of the PhD student is on coatings on machine elements and optimalisation of the coating for a specific application.

The performance of the self healing composite oxide ceramic will be quantified in a demonstrator valve / valve seat that has to perform under heavy tribological conditions. The demonstrator applications are engines on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and enhanced diesel engines for heavy duty applications. This demonstrator will be developed by TNO Science and Industry.

Profile
You have completed a Masters in mechanical engineering, materials science or equivalent with interest in ceramics and/or tribology. You are proficient in spoken and written English and you have well developed social skills to co-operatively work in a research group.

You will be based at the Laboratory for Surface Technology and Tribology of the University of Twente and be joining an innovative and diverse group working on Tribology, Surface Technology and Materials. For more information on the research group visit www.tr.ctw.utwente.nl
