Three categories of scholarships are available - those offered by Monash University, those offered by the Australian Government, and those offered by other organisations.
It is a good idea to examine all scholarships on offer in order to see what you could be eligible for.
A limited number of awards are available for overseas students who obtain a place for undergraduate study in October 2009, details of which are given below. Details of scholarships for overseas students offered by colleges or departments of the University may be obtained directly from the colleges or departments, or by using Oxford’s Funding Search – available online.
To be considered for any of these awards, you must first apply to Oxford using the application procedure (see How to apply). There are separate applications forms for the scholarships, which you can apply for between January and February 2009. Further information for each scheme can be found below.

Tribology of Fiber Reinforced Elastomers and Thermoplastics

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students and is the Netherlands' only campus university.
The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project "Sustainable Elastomers and Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber Reinforcement".
Relatively new short-cut aramid-fiber/elastomer composites show considerably improved tribological properties, in particular cut, ship and chunk resistance in truck tire treads. In addition, the hysteretic properties of aramid-fiber reinforced rubber are greatly reduced, which can immediately be translated in lower rolling resistance of tires and energy or fuel savings of cars equipped with short-cut fiber reinforced tires. Short-cut fiber reinforced tires are therefore very interesting as valuable contributions to a sustainable world.
Important prerequisites for the improvement in properties of the polymers with the aramid fibers are a strong adhesion between fiber and polymeric substrate, respectively a favorable fiber orientation must be established during processing, in order to prevent anisotropy in friction and wear properties. Unfortunately, there are no general controls and experiences available how short-cut fiber reinforced polymers of all sorts need to be designed with respect to their tribological properties for specific applications.
Aim of the project is to develop scientific understanding and generic models for further development of improved short-cut fiber reinforced polymers, thermoplastic and elastomeric. Reliable tribology test methods, against different materials (e.g. metals and asphalt) will be used in combination with state-of-the-art analytical characterization techniques like SEM, TEM and surface analysis. Experimental investigations will be carried out in parallel with the development of models to describe tribological properties, such as friction and wear, on a micro scale, again in relation to the fiber-matrix adhesion and mean fiber orientation.
This PhD opportunity will suit a person with a degree in physical sciences (physics, engineering, materials science, etc.).

Mechanical and thermal activated self healing surfaces made of composite ceramics for mechanical components

Project
The project is part of a national program on self healing materials financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. Self healing materials are recognized as a new class of engineering materials with the capacity to more or less autonomously repair internal damage.
Oxide ceramics have large potential to be applied in technological applications for their high temperature stability and erosion / corrosion resistance. An important limitation for application is a high coefficient of friction when in contact with a countersurface. Besides that a high coefficient of friction does result in energy losses, it also increases the risk of crack growth, originating from the surface. When oxide ceramics, like Al2O3 and ZrO2 and their composites (ZTA and ADZ), are doped with CuO, it is very interesting to observe that a very thin CuO layer is present on the surface after sintering and machining. Previous research has shown that this thin layer is self – healing when a countersurface is sliding over the surface. The project is focusing on further experimental investigation and modelling of this mechanism, a first application of the developed materials in valve seats of engines as well as optimizing the microstructure for specific applications.
Currently, a Postdoc is working on the project for about half a year. His main task is modelling of mass transport responsible for the layer formation. In the beginning of the PhD project a close cooperation and transfer of knowledge with the Postdoc will take place.
The PhD research comprises experimental preparation and characterisation of the samples as well as further modelling of the contact and self healing behaviour of the surface layer. The focus of the PhD student is on coatings on machine elements and optimalisation of the coating for a specific application.
The performance of the self healing composite oxide ceramic will be quantified in a demonstrator valve / valve seat that has to perform under heavy tribological conditions. The demonstrator applications are engines on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and enhanced diesel engines for heavy duty applications. This demonstrator will be developed by TNO Science and Industry.
Profile
You have completed a Masters in mechanical engineering, materials science or equivalent with interest in ceramics and/or tribology. You are proficient in spoken and written English and you have well developed social skills to co-operatively work in a research group.

The Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarship is currently open to student applicants with the appropriate grades (minimum A to A+) for their prerequisite degree or equivalent. From 2007 onwards, this minimum eligible grade was raised to 87 instead of 85. This grade will not be negotiable.

For the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research, one objective being to build up strong research schools at the University, Victoria offers PhD scholarships to those about to commence their doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

Selection criteria
The Scholarships are open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol either for PhD. In exceptional cases, applications may be considered from students seeking scholarship support for a PhD degree for which they are already enrolled at VUW. In such cases applicants are required to provide detailed evidence of their exceptional circumstances which must be accompanied by clear support from their supervisor.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
First offers of Victoria Phd Scholarships will be made in August and late December of the year of application. Because some applicants may in the event decline the offer of a Scholarship with the result that further offers have to be made, it is possible that some applicants will not be finally notified of the success or otherwise of their applications until as late as the end of February of the following year. If you are unsuccessful you will be notified by email only. Please provide a clearly written email address if available.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholarship recipients shall be required to devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a maximum of 600 hours in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor.
Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period not exceeding one year. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their PhD enrolment.
A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research within one month of the last day of the period of the deferment.
Additional information
Applicants who are permanent residents of New Zealand, Australia, France or Germany will, in addition to the scholarship emolument, be provided with the full cost of their tuition fees. Overseas doctoral students, from January 2006, will also be eligible for domestic tuition fees.
Applicants, other than those who have completed all of their study at Victoria, must include a certified copy of their academic record from other institutions with this application. Applicants whose degree has been conferred at any university other than a New Zealand University will be considered in two categories:

Aimed at building international linkages and networks, these Awards provide opportunities for award holders to further develop their knowledge and skills.

Sida's Travel Grant is aimed at increasing the number of young Swedes holding international positions in development work promoted by Sweden, for example, through the United Nations. This scholarship provide funding for un-paid work practice in international organisations.
MFS (Minor Field Studies) is a Sida funded scholarship programme for field studies in developing countries. It is intended for students at universities and university colleges with an international interest wishing to gather material for their Bachelor or Master dissertations for periods of between 8 to 10 weeks. It aims at providing Swedish students with the opportunity of building up their knowledge of developing countries and development issues.
Linnaeus-Palme is an exchange programme financed by Sida for university teachers and students. The first part, Linnaeus, enables Swedish teachers and students to study in the third world. The second part, Palme, offers teachers and students in developing countries the chance to come to Sweden. The purpose is to strengthen Swedish teaching institutions' co-operation with universities in developing countries in order to further global contacts in the university world.
