Quota Scheme- NTNU's largest loan and scholarship - Norway

NTNU ScholarshipsThe Quota Scheme is Norway's and NTNU's largest loan and scholarship scheme for financing students from eligible developing countries, and countries in Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia.

You may be eligibile for Quota Scheme support if you are either a student or temporarily or permanently employed at one of the institutions where NTNU has a collaborative agreement. These institutions are mainly found in developing countries or in Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia. Please refer to the list of institutions:

To be ellgible, you must also have stayed at least one year in your home country directly prior to when you plan to undertake your education at NTNU or any other Norwegian university/ college. That means you cannot apply for financial support directly from a country than your own.

NTNU has been granted 168 seats (157 for developing countries, and 11 for Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia) for the academic years 2008-2009, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011.However, there are only about 60-65 new seats each year under the Quota Scheme at NTNU. The rest of NTNU’s Quota Scheme seats are used for students who are already admitted at our university, and who need renewal of Quota Scheme support to complete their studies.

The few Quota Scheme seats available, compared with the very high number of applicants competing for new seats, makes this source of funding support extremely competitive. Only very qualified candidates from collaborating institutions will therefore be offered admission.

Scholarships and PhD Positions in Environmental Geochemistry at Eawag

OverviewEawag equatic reserch swiss
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally active research institute within the domain of the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Science and Technology). It is committed to the ecologically, economically and socially responsible management of water.

Within the department of Water Resources and Drinking Water, the group Molecular Envi-ronmental Geochemistry has a vacancy for a PhD Student in Environmental Geochemistry.

The subject of the doctoral thesis will be “Iron(III) precipitates formed by iron(II) oxida-tion in natural waters: Structure, reactivity and impact on arsenic”.

Iron precipitation plays an important biogeochemical role and influences water quality in many natural systems. Iron precipitation is also widely used for the treatment of wastewater and the purification of drinking water, for example to remove arsenic.

The goal of this project is to advance the current state of knowledge regarding the structure and reactivity of iron precipitates forming under a variety of chemical conditions as a basis for improved water resources management. Arsenic represents a widespread contaminant of water resources and its co-transformation with iron will therefore be considered in this study. The work is predominantly laboratory-based and involves the use of state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation. Synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and electron microscopy will mainly be used for the characterization of iron precipitates and arsenic speciation.

Scholarship for PhD in 2nd Generation Biofuel Production from Waste Resources in Ghana at DTU Denmark

biofuels productionOverview
The NRG Programme at Risø DTU offers a three years PhD scholarship starting in November 2010.

The Project
The project will develop sustainable technologies for production of 2nd generation biofuels (biogas, bioethanol and biodiesel) from lignocellulosic waste material in developing countries in Africa. In addition the main is to utilize residuals from the bioenergy production as fertilizer to improving soil fertility and food security. The suggested technologies will make it possible to switch from a society depending more and more on fossil energy to a modern biomass based society. Ghana will be used as a model country.

The PhD will map and select waste resources found in Ghana that are relevant for production of biofuel and the resources will be characterized. The waste will be subject to pre-treatment such as silage treatment, hydrothermal treatment and maceration and thereafter be converted to biofuel in the laboratory. Various conversion technologies shall be tested: ethanol production, biogas and biodiesel. Based on the results different concepts for combined bioethanol, biogas and biodiesel will be developed. Codigestion concepts for an optimized biogas production will also be tested as well as innovative reactor setups will be tested. Finally an evaluation of most suitable biofuel technology will and a sustainability assessment will be carried out.

PhD studentship in Geobiosphere Scienceat the Department of Earth and Ecosystem Science, Faculty of Science

Project description: Fluvial transport of amorphous silica

The PhD project will investigate the transport of amorphous silica by rivers to theworld's oceans. Amorphous silica (ASi) mostly originates from biological uptake byplants. Plants take up dissolved silicate and deposit it as an amorphous form ofsilica called phytoliths. Phytoliths and ASi formed in soils enters aquaticecosystems through litterfall and erosion. In addition, diatoms in aquaticecosystems also take up dissolved silicate and deposit it as ASi. There is a widerange of concentrations found in rivers depending upon the soils and vegetation inthe watershed, and algal growth in lakes and rivers. The amount of ASi transportedby rivers to the world's oceans is poorly known.

There are a large number of applicants from which the Scholarship Organization tries to select those students whose outstanding achievements, social political dedication and personal qualities offer the best possible guarantee that the scholarship will be completed successfully.

In 1981, the Hanns Seidel Foundation support for foreign scholars began with 24 scholarships for students from the People’s Republic of China. Since then, assistance has been provided to more than 1.363 scholars from 71 countries. Every year, nearly 100 academics, mostly from the Third World, complete the program for foreign postgraduates, normally with two-year-scholarships.

The stay in the Federal Republic of Germany and the experiences which it entails are intended to enable foreign scholars, after they return home, to play an active part in positions of responsibility in their countries‘ economic, technological, social and political development, and to contribute actively to mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
In 2008, the Hanns Seidel Foundation awards the following scholarships in Germany:
  • 255 university students; many of them used the opportunity to spend part or all of an academic year abroad
  • 167 postgraduates working for doctorates
  • 194 students at the university of applied sciences
  • 86 students in „sponsorship for junior journalists“

The Scholarship Organisation’s events
The Hanns Seidel Foundation’s Scholarship Organization organizes weekend seminars and vacation activities, among other things, for scholars and junior journalists, and also media congresses and expert discussions on media policy.

Former scholarsThe close contact that former scholarship recipient have with the Hanns Seidel Foundation’s work is worthy of note. The „Former scholars club“ – founded in 1992 – carries out its own event program with seminars, study trips, etc.

Foreign Scholarships - Scholarships for foreign postgraduates and academics
For the Hanns Seidel Foundation, assisting young and highly qualified foreign academics, especially from Third World countries, is an investment in the future with the aim of enabling the trained experts to play their part in the independent further development of their home countries so as to turn these into politically stable and economically strong partners for the entire world. The intention is to avoid conflicts between developing countries themselves and between developing countries and industrial nations and to play a role in paving the way to a peaceful coexistence of all nations on Earth on a political, economic and social level.

Target group
The targets for foreign scholarships are young (the age limit is 32 years) and highly qualified foreign postgraduates with excellent degrees, good knowledge of the German language and socio-political commitment.
Recruiting of scholarship applicants
The project managers, in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation's partner organizations, pre-select promising candidates in the respective countries. This means that only applicants directly from the above mentioned projects or their immediate vicinity can be considered. Unfortunately, direct applications to the Hanns Seidel Foundation cannot be considered.

Scholarship duration
The duration of a scholarship is 3 to 12 months. Scholarships are granted for research projects, internships or the final phase of research studies or doctorates. In the case of doctorates, a 6 to 12 month scholarship within the scope of "sandwich programs" is possible.
