News: Louisiana Tech University's bachelor of science in nanosystems engineering gets accreditation

Louisiana Tech University's bachelor of science in nanosystems
engineering has become the nation's first undergraduate degree program
in the field of nanoengineering to receive accreditation.

The
program, which is the first of its kind in the U.S., received
accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET
(Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). The nanosystems
engineering program was established in 2005 as an interdisciplinary
degree program that provides students with the skills to work with
functional systems at the molecular scale.

"This accreditation
indicates that Louisiana Tech not only offers strong traditional degrees
in engineering and science, but also offers innovative,
forward-looking, cutting-edge programs like nanosystems and biomedical
engineering," said Dr. Stan Napper, dean of the College of Engineering
and Science.

The program utilizes Louisiana Tech's laboratory
resources and interdisciplinary research, education and support
programs, "allowing students to

apply nanotechnology fabrication
techniques, as well as fundamental engineering skills learned through
the integrated freshman and sophomore engineering curricula," according
to a university news release.

The accreditation gives students who
earn a bachelor's degree in the program eligibility to take the
Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and apply to the state engineering
board to become engineers in training.

"It gives some assurance to
the students who are looking at this brand new degree program that the
quality of this degree is just as high as any of our other engineering
degrees," Napper said. "Being the first and the only accredited
nanosystems engineering program in the country, these early graduates
from Louisiana Tech will be recruited by major graduate schools and many
will go on for masters and doctorate degrees."

[wp_campaign_1]

Napper said the degree can be utilized in both traditional industries and newer fields.

"Some
traditional applications include long-standing industries like oil and
gas, chemical processing and even some biomedical technologies," he
said. "It also has applications in newer industries such as the
production of new materials."

Louisiana Tech's nanosystems
engineering program currently has an enrollment of about 70 students and
has had roughly 25 graduates since its launch in 2005.

Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or BSc in Pharmacy

A BSc in Pharmacy  program leading to
the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, or for some program called A Bachelor
of Pharmacy
(abbreviated BPharm), that is  is an undergraduate
academic
degree
in the field of pharmacy.

In this kind of program, students will learn how to help patients use
medications and medical devices; provide drug information to patients and other
health professionals; and much more. The curriculum incorporates problem-based
learning, and many courses emphasize small group work, group projects,
presentations, workshops and the use of web technology. The curriculum also
includes experiential learning, in the form of clerkships completed at
community and hospital sites.

Pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists are in great demand, and jobs are
available in community pharmacies, hospital pharmacy departments, government
service and pharmaceutical companies.

The degree of BPharm is the basic prerequisite for
registration to practice as a pharmacist in many countries. In some countries,
it has been superseded by the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) and Doctor of
Pharmacy (PharmD) degrees. In the United States,
this degree was granted as the baccalaureate pharmacy degree only at Washington State University,
where it has now been superseded by the PharmD degree. The degree previously
offered within the US—and
still the required degree in Canada—is
the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.

MBA Survey 2010: Harvard’s MBA Graduates Earn Most in Lifetime

Harvard Business School is the world’s most expensive full-time MBA program, with tuition and required fees eclipsing $106,000 for two years. It pays off: Havard Business School graduates earn more money over the span of their careers than those from any other school. Harvard degree holders earn more than $3.9 million during their careers compared to $3.5 million for those from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton school and $3.3 million for those who got their MBAs from Columbia University, reports Bloomberg BusinessWeek on its website. “It’s the trickle-down effect,” says Robert Dammon , associate dean and professor of financial economics at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business in Pittsburgh.

The kinds of students that the best schools attract are going to get the highest paying jobs.” With few exceptions, Dammon is correct. The top ranked–and most expensive — MBA programs produce the highest salaried grads over the span of their careers, according to research commissioned by Bloomberg BusinessWeek. For the second year, Bloomberg Businessweek asked PayScale , a company that collects salary data from individuals through online pay comparison tools, to use its database of 23,000 MBA graduates at the top 45 U.S. business schools to calculate their median cash compensation — salaries and bonuses — around graduation and after they have an average of 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of work experience in the same industry. Bloomberg Businessweek then used that data to calculate an estimate of median cash earnings over the entire 20-year span. Lifetime Earnings On average, MBAs from the top 45 business schools will make about $2.5 million in base pay and bonuses over the course of a 20-year career. There are great differences between the total compensation of the schools at the top of the list compared to those closer to the bottom, especially as MBAs move deeper into their careers. An MBA graduate from the Tippie College at The University of Iowa will earn less than half that of a graduate of Harvard, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Newly-minted MBAs at some programs, such as Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, earn high starting salaries, but experience a only a minimal increase over time. At other schools, like the University of Connecticut, MBA grads more than double their salaries over the 20-year timeframe. The numbers don’t include stock or options, and the pay data for some smaller schools at the 20-year mark may be based on fewer than 100 pay reports. They also do not track the same graduates over time; they reflect the experience of individuals who graduated at various points throughout the last 20 years.

Accelerated Bachelor Degree

The accelerated bachelor's degree is designed for students who have an existing associate degree or who have partial college credits that are transferable. An accelerated bachelor's degree is an undergraduate degree that is
available either at campus based colleges and universities or through
online schools.

The accelerated bachelor's degree is also for students who hold a bachelor's degree in another major and perhaps want a career change or another undergraduate degree. Students who do not have any previous college credit can also obtain an accelerated bachelor's degree in approximately 3 years as opposed to the typical 4 years. Some schools even offer accelerated bachelor's degrees combined with a master's degree.Accelerated bachelor's degrees are offered for a variety of areas of study including business, education, health care, or technology. Accelerated programs, whether on campus or online, are for the motivated, self-disciplined student.

Online programs utilize a student's computer and the Internet, and classes are often completed one at a time over a 5 to 8 week period. On campus accelerated programs typically combine Internet learning and more flexible class times to accommodate students.Earning an accelerated bachelor's degree is a valuable move for the individual seeking a career change, a promotion, faster entrance into the job market, or graduate school.

Loans for Sudents - Blessing or Curse?

Loans for education can be a blessing but also a curse to college students . Loans for students allow them to have the fund they need in many cases to attend university at all.On the other hand, most college students, particularly those entering college for the first time have inflated opinions of their starting salaries upon graduation and the bills they will face while living in the real world. In fact, most freshmen college students have no real concept of the limits of money in which to base their decisions as to whether or not they can realistically expect to repay those funds after graduate.

The bad things, in many cases, that many college graduates find that during first 10-15 yearsafter graduation, they are essentially indentured servants to their debts from student loans. Many reasons for this:

(a) those taking out student loans need to understand that a college degree does not guarantee a high starting salary
(b) there is no 100% guaranteed you could be hired after you have graduated from schools or college with a degree in hand.
(c) that most college graduated could not find a job up to a year and if so, the paycheck is less than what they expected.

Should I Pursue MBA Degree?

An MBA is a broader, practical oriented degree covering all aspects of a business (Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Operations) and then allowing you to specialize in your desired major. An MBA holds more value in the job market as students completing this course are already qualified with prior work experience. The leading business schools worldwide require above 3 years of work experience. Hence, I would recommend you to work for more years and gather more work experience which will strengthen your profile and help your admissions in a good B-school.

You will need to take GMAT and TOEFL for admission. For more information on these exams refer to the 'Prep Talks' and 'Test Drives' sections on www.educationtimes.com. Have a look the top 100 business schools offering the MBA, listed on www.ft.com. With regards to the admission procedure, you will be required to do the following: appear for the entrance tests, finalize your schools, complete the online application form and then mail the supporting documents (such as resume, recommendation letters, essays, financial documents, mark sheets, transcripts) to the university. Remember to start applying to universities at least 1 year prior to the course starting date.
