Ph.D. Fellowship/Scholarships Program for the 2006-2007 Academic Year

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship is an annual, worldwide competitive program.

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Program for the 2007/2008 academic year will be open for nominations starting approximately September 19 through October 31, 2006.

Intent

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Program honors exceptional Ph.D. students in an array of focus areas of interest to IBM and fundamental to innovation, including:

Business value: services and software to improve business performance

• Business analytics: business optimization, risk analysis, legislative compliance and provenance, privacy and security
• Business transformation and services innovation: architecture of business and processes, performance management and transformation, value networks/ecosystems, and services sciences, management, and engineering (SSME)
• Information management and analysis: information lifecycle management, standards, storage/search/retrieval, sensor/actuator/speech/video/text services, text/media analytics for business intelligence, information based medicine

Infrastructure value: hardware, software and services integrated into an open computing environment

• Deep computing: bio-informatics, distributed algorithms, visual analysis, stochastic analysis
• Computing infrastructure:Computing infrastructure: BlueGene on demand, special clusters, new computing architectures, autonomic computing, grid computing, streaming data
• Pervasive Computing:Pervasive Computing: integration of sensor and actuators, embedded computing, RFID applications, medical and telematics applications with IT

Exploratory Computing Technology:
Power management, nano, computer-on-a-chip technology, new device structures.

Scope
IBM Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded worldwide. IBM Ph.D. Fellows are awarded tuition, fees, and a stipend of $17,500 (US) for one academic year. All IBM Ph.D. Fellows are matched with an IBM Mentor according to their technical interests, and they are encouraged to intern at an IBM research or development laboratory under their Mentor's guidance. An IBM ThinkPad is awarded during the internship. Internship assignments are designed to strengthen and broaden the Awardee's technical experience and contacts. Interns are paid by their host site and will be subject to the prevailing terms and conditions of the internship program at that site. IBM is an equal opportunity employer.

IBM Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded annually but may compete annually to be renewed for up to three years, based on the Award Recipient's continued exceptional academic standing, progress and achievement, and sustained interaction with IBM's technical community. All Award Recipient's wishing for an award renewal must be renominated to compete for an award renewal. IBM requests that a maximum of two nominations per department be submitted in addition to any renewal nominations.

Eligibility
Students must be nominated by a faculty member. They must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they should have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination. Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head.

Universität Bern (Swiss) - International Master's Scholarships

The Universität Bern has decided to grant international students Master excellency scholarships for the academic year 2006/07.

Criteria for selection:
Students must have graduated from a university with at least a Bachelor Degree. The candidates file should include the following:

• Application form (see downloads)
• Curriculum vitae/résumé
• Letter of motivation & objectives
• Letter of recommendation and confirmation from a professor at the Universität Bern
• Form ‚Admission to Master's course' of the faculty (see downloads)
• Record of sufficient proficiency in German or granted dispensation by the faculty (photocopies)
• Record of grades obtained during Bachelor studies (photocopies)
• Record of school-leaving examination, i.e. qualifying for university entrance (e.g. photocopies of secondary school certificates)

The application file has to be written in the language of the corresponding Master course.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships- LaTrobe University

1. Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scheme (EIPRS)

The EIPRS award is open to international students who are seeking to undertake a higher degree by research at a Master's or PhD level. These scholarships are funded by the Australian Government and approximately 300 scholarships are awarded nationally each year.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are designed to cover tuition fees for a period of two years for a Master's by Research degree and three years for a Doctoral (PhD) degree.

The closing date for these scholarships is 30 September for students who wish to begin their studies the following year.

Scholarship recipients must be ready to commence no later than 30 June in the year following application. Please note also that scholarship offers will be made conditional on evidence of English language proficiency.

International students may apply for this scholarship when they apply for admission to La Trobe University. A separate application form is not required, although applicants should note that they may be required to submit further documentation on request (e.g. thesis chapter/s in English translation).

Applicants for the EIPRS are also advised to apply for a La Trobe Postgraduate Research Scholarship (LTUPRS); please see below.

2. La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS)

International students who are seeking to undertake a higher degree by research at a Master's or PhD level can also apply for the La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS).

In 2005, the University offered 59 La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships and each scholarship was valued at A$18,000 per annum for full-time study.

The closing date for these scholarships is 30 September for students who wish to begin their studies the following year.

Scholarship recipients must be ready to commence no later than 30 June in the year following application. Please note also that scholarship offers will be made conditional on evidence of English language proficiency.

International students may apply for this scholarship when they apply for admission to La Trobe University. A separate application form is not required, although applicants should note that they may be required to submit further documentation on request (e.g. thesis chapter/s in English translation).

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships

Asian Development Bank - Japan Scholarship Program

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan.

It aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB's developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region.

Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

The ADB-JSP enrolls about 300 students annually in 20 academic institutions located in 10 countries within the Region.

The ADB-JSP provides full scholarships for one to two years.

Request for further information and application form from academic institution(s) of choice.

Complete the Information Sheet Form (may be photocopied) and send it to the academic institution(s) where you want to study. Attach all requirements indicated.

The institutions, using their standard criteria, will evaluate the applications and contact candidates for further information. The institution will then endorse eligible candidates to ADB. ADB will make a selection and inform each institution accordingly. The institutions will inform all applicants and make arrangements for successful ones to take up their scholarships.

• No separate application to ADB is necessary.
• The duly accomplished information sheet together with all copies of academic records should be sent to the institution at least six (6) months before the commencement of the intake that you wish to join.
• Only candidates who have been offered admission and endorsed by the academic institutions will be considered for the scholarships by the ADB.
