10 research scholarship for foreign students to attend Doctoral Schools. Scholarships are fully funded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo. Doctoral courses will last 3 years, starting on 2nd January 2007 and ending 31st December 2009.

Doctoral students must carry out the activities pertinent to their approved research studies and, at the end of each year, they must present a report regarding the performed activities and research to the Doctorate School Council. At the end of the 3-year programmes, they will also have to present a Doctorate thesis with original contributions. The degree of Dottore di ricerca is attained once the final exam has been passed. This exam can be repeated, but once only. This exam consists of a discussion with the candidate on his/her
thesis.

Benefits

The amount of the scholarship is 10,561EUR per year. The amount of the scholarship is increased by 50% for periods of study abroad excluding the official country of residence.

Full board and lodging are offered at the ESU Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario. The connected charges will be covered by the Università degli Studi di Padova through the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo.

Modeling The Mitotic Spindle

European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg, Germany.

Eukaryotic cells are the building blocks of multi-cellular life. Their genetic material is stored on discrete entities: the chromosomes, which must be segregated to the daughter cells at each division. This essential task is accomplished with high fidelity by the mitotic spindle, a remarkable example of dynamic intracellular structure. A PhD fellowship financed by HFSP is available in the laboratory of F. Nédélec, to study the mitotic spindle using the tools of biophysics, modeling and numerical simulations. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the experimental laboratories of Arshad Desai (Ludwig cancer research institute, San Diego, USA).

We proposed to initially study the chromosomes alignment in spindle of C. elegans. We will study further aspects of microtubule-chromosome interactions in divergent organisms, to uncover universal mechanisms of mitotic spindle function. The work will involve advanced optical microscopy, mathematical modeling, and will require traveling to San Diego.

Applicants with prior training in Physics, Mathematics, I.T. or engineering, and a willingness to explore the opportunities offered in Biology are encouraged to apply. PhD studentship - McGill University, Canada

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship available in the Neuropragmatics and Emotion Lab at McGill University beginning September, 2007.

The appropriate student will share general research interests with members of the lab which touch on the communication of emotion or attitudes in the human voice and/or through spoken language. The recipient will be expected to apply and register for a PhD in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at McGill University (Montréal, Canada) and will be supervised by Dr. Marc Pell

Applicants must possess a first-class honours degree (minimum Bachelor-level equivalent) in Linguistics, Psychology, Communication Disorders, or a related discipline, preferrably with courses in psycho/neuro-linguistics. The specific research focus should be developed by the student but will probably centre on defining acoustic, perceptual, and/or neuro-cognitive components for understanding or expressing emotive qualities in speech during natural communication; disorders of emotive communication following acquired brain damage; or the influences of emotion and affect on normal and/or disordered language processing.


Funding is for a maximum of three years and will consist of an annual stipend of CAD $20,000 plus support for presenting work at research meetings.

Research Grants in Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics- Italy

National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (Trieste, Italy) The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (the Abdus Salam ICTP) and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) will offer in the years 2007 - 2008 a number of grants to scientists from Developing Countries (Central and Eastern Europe included) interested in taking part in the training and research activities carried out at the OGS laboratories. The main lines of activity at the OGS groups are described in the Annex.

The minimum amount of these grants will be Euro 1,300 per month and stays longer than twelve months may be possible. Limited funds for travel expenses will be available in case these are not covered by other sources. Health insurance coverage will be provided for visitors and their accompanying family members. A monthly family allowance for those having dependant family members will be granted
