EIPRS Scholarships at Australian Universities

To be eligible to apply for the EIPRS, you must:
1. be an overseas student who is eligible to undertake a higher degree by research candidature within UTS’s areas of research strengths, and
2. be able to commence in full time enrolment for the first time in 2009, unless:
- you commenced your HDR during 2008 but, due to the timing of your applications and subsequent enrolment were not able to apply for the 2008 EIPRS, or
- you have terminated any previous HDR enrolment within six months of commencement
3. not hold a research qualification regarded by UTS as equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree or, if undertaking a Research by Master degree, not hold a research qualification regarded as equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Master’s degree, and
4. not have held an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the EIPRS, and
5. not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition fee is a component under any scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.

Eligibility for admission
PhD Degree
Applicants shall:
- hold a Bachelor’s degree with First or Second Class Honours, Division 1 or a Master’s Degree by research of the University of Technology, Sydney; or
- possess an equivalent qualification.
In addition, applicants will be required to provide satisfactory evidence of their ability to undertake advanced research appropriate to their PhD program.

Master’s Degree by Research
Applicants shall:
- hold a Bachelor’s Degree of the University of Technology, Sydney; or
- possess an equivalent qualification; or
- submit such other evidence of general and professional qualifications as will satisfy the Academic Board that the applicant possesses the educational preparation and capacity to pursue graduate studies.

English proficiency
Applicants whose formal education was conducted in a language other than English are required to provide evidence of their English language proficiency. Evidence of English language proficiency must be provided by the closing dates specified in this information.

Selection criteria
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, research capacity and research potential. The applicant’s intended area of study must be in an area of research concentration of the institution.

Supporting documents essential for your applications (required for International Student Postgraduate and EIPRS application)

- Research proposal detailing your research objectives, example of your key literature in your area of interest and a broad outline of the sequence and timing of the work that you plan to do;
- Evidence of prior research experience, including work for Bachelor’s Honours or Master theses, consultancies or industry-based research;
- The name of your potential supervisors (or supervisors) at UTS with whom you have discussed your research interest or have agreed to supervise your research project
- Reports from 2 referees, preferably from someone who are familiar with your research interest and who can confirm your capacity to carry out research. Use the the Academic Referee’s Report form (pdf 24kb).
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae including:
Details of any academic prizes gained during your tertiary studies
Details of any work experience (paid or unpaid) relevant to your proposed research project
Details of publication in academic or peer reviewed journals, published books or chapters of books
Details of patents achieved or any other output, for example, exhibited works (if applicable)

All supporting documents must be properly certified, these include:
- English proficiency test results
- Copies of degree(s) awarded and full academic transcript(s) showing the subjects studied, the marks obtained and an explanation of the grading system must be provided
- For documents not in English, the original language documents and an official translation must also be certified

Photocopies that are not certified will not be accepted.
Documents certified by a Justice of Peace will not be accepted.

Notification of the outcome
Eligible applicants will receive email notification of the outcome of their EIPRS in late November 2008.

The Foundation announces the fourteenth (14th) annual Programme of research grants and educational scholarships starting on October 1st, 2008, which is addressed to non Greeks, full Members of National Academies, University Professors of all levels (Ph.D. holders), postdoctoral researchers (Ph.D. holders), artists, elementary and secondary school teachers of the Greek language as a foreign one, post-graduate students and Ph.D. candidates.

The Programme covers the following fields only:
o Humanities: Philology, Literature, Linguistics, Theology, History, Archaeology, Philosophy, Educational Studies, Psychology
o Political Science: Sociology, International Relations
o Arts: Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre, Photography, Film Studies

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION


The grants and scholarships offered within the framework of this Programme cover scholarly research, post-educational training in the teaching of the Greek language and culture and/or artistic creation in Greece only and in the fields stated in the above paragraph only.

In principle, only persons of non Greek descent are eligible to participate in the Programme. As an exception to this rule, Cypriot citizens are also eligible to apply for category AI and AII grants only, provided they are permanently residing and working outside Greece.

Additionally, as a second exception to the general rule, persons of Greek descent (second generation and on) are also eligible to apply for a grant or scholarship, provided they are permanently residing and working abroad or currently studying in foreign Universities. More specifically, Categories AI and AII also apply to Scholars of Greek descent or citizenship provided they have a professional academic career of at least ten (10) years in a University or Research Institute abroad. Also eligible for the Programme are Teachers of the Greek Language of Greek descent or citizenship, who work at elementary or secondary schools outside of Greece and post-graduate students of Greek descent or citizenship, who pursue post-graduate studies outside of Greece (categories B and C), have obtained a degree outside of Greece and are permanently residing outside of Greece for more than fifteen (15) years.

The decision to authorise each application for a grant or scholarship is left to the absolute discretion of the Board of Directors of the Foundation. The Board takes into account the recommendations of the Foundation's Scientific Committee, which is selected by the Board, but is not bound by these recommendations. Furthermore, the Board of Directors can grant or not an application without communicating the rationale. All meetings of the Board and all recommendations of the Committee are confidential and under no circumstances will they be communicated to the applicants. The submission of an application equals acceptance of all the conditions of the Announcement.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. No candidacy will be taken in for examination unless accompanied by all of the required supporting documents (including the recommendation letters).
2. The letters of recommendation must be strictly addressed to the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, Foreigners' Fellowships Programme. Please note that photocopies of letters of recommendation will not be accepted. The letters can be included in the candidate's file or be sent directly to the Foundation by the referees.
3. Any correspondence with the Foundation as well as the nomination/application forms and all supporting documents, i.e. certificates, letters of recommendation, degrees, diplomas, university transcripts etc. must be written and submitted in one of the working languages of the Foundation, i.e. Greek, English or French. Otherwise, they must be translated in one of those languages and the copies must be legalised by Public Authority.
4. The submitted supporting documents will not be returned. Applicants are kindly requested to submit copies, legalised by Public Authority, on A4 paper size [297x210mm].
5. The artists should also include samples of their artistic work and/or audiovisual material in the application file. Original artifacts are not accepted. The samples will not be returned to the candidate after two years of their submission to the Foundation.
6. All applicants are kindly requested to send their applications to the Foundation directly and not through private or public institutions or organisations.
7. Those candidates who have already applied for a grant/scholarship within the last two years and wish to apply again this year do not have to submit all the required documents. Only the following are required: a) application form b) a new CV c) a new letter with the project proposal.
8. Former Fellows of the Foundation can re-apply for a grant or scholarship only if five years have elapsed since their previous grant or scholarship.
9. Former Fellows of the Foundation who have received a grant or scholarship twice cannot apply again for a grant or scholarship.

RESEARCH GRANTS


UNIVERSITY FULL PROFESSORS

Number of Grants: Up to ten [10]
Duration: One [1] month during the academic year Oct. 2008 – Sept. 2009
Addressed to: Full Members of National Academies and Full University Professors whose scholarly or artistic work has been widely acclaimed and who wish to visit Greece in order to conduct scholarly research or to collaborate with educational or research institutions and/or organisations
Tenure: All nominees are expected to have had at least five-years' tenure of office as full professors before applying for the grant
Condition: Only Full Professors are eligible to submit a nomination for this grant. The grantees of category AI will be invited, on a case by case basis, to deliver a lecture or to conduct a seminar during their stay in Greece, either at the Onassis Cultural Centre of Athens or at a University or another research or cultural centre.
Subject of Research: The proposed research subject should be either directly related to the Greek culture, civilization and history or have an obvious social return for Greece.
Requirements: The grantees are bound to publish 2 (two) scientific articles dealing with findings of the research granted by the Foundation within a period of 12 months from the expiration of their grant. The Foundation' s name has to be mentioned as the sponsor of the research.
The grantee must have a specific collaboration with a Full Professor from a Greek Public University.

Condition: For cases (a) 1, (a) 2, (a) 3, (a) 4 and b) above, all applicants should have already finished their Ph.D. The grantees of category AII will be invited, on a case by case basis, to deliver a lecture or to conduct a seminar during their stay in Greece, either at the Onassis Cultural Centre of Athens or at a University or another research or cultural centre.

CATEGORY B

TEACHER - TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS


TEACHERS OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE, HISTORY & CIVILIZATION

Number of scholarships: Five [5]
Duration: up to six [6] months during the academic year Oct. 2008-Sept. 2009
Addressed to: active elementary or high school foreign teachers, who currently teach the Modern Greek language and literature. Teachers of Ancient Greek and literature are also eligible, provided they speak modern Greek very well. For the applicants of this category very good and certified knowledge of Modern Greek language is absolutely compulsory.
Age Limit: None
Aim of the Scholarship: These scholarships aim at the acquaintance, collaboration and exchange of information between the scholarship recipients and their Greek colleagues in Greek schools, education or other relevant departments of Greek universities. The Scholarship does not cover the learning or improvement of the Greek language at language courses. The fellows follow a Teaching Practice programme of attendance of Greek language courses and other courses at a specific elementary school and high school of Athens and have the opportunity to sit in some of the courses of the postgraduate course of Teaching Greek as a Foreign Language of the University of Athens.
Condition: This programme presupposes that the scholarship recipients will continue offering their services to their country of origin, after they have completed their training in Greece.

Department of Mathematics
Applications are invited for a number of PhD studentships in the Statistics Group, Department of Mathematics, University of Bristol, UK. The Statistics Group has an international reputation for excellence in research and in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise it was awarded ratings of 5*A.

The studentships will be restricted to students of a high quality - the normal entry requirement is the equivalent of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours at undergraduate level. Worldwide qualified students are encouraged to apply.

The Statistics Group offers a number of studentships up to a maximum of 3.5 year studentships for UK and EU PhD students who have been residents in the UK for 3 years prior to application, and fees-only funding for other EU students. The studentships include a tax-free stipend of £12,600 per year.

For overseas students, the university has several sources of funding available including the Overseas Research Studentship (ORS) and Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award (DHPA). The scholarships cover the overseas tuition fee plus a maintenance stipend. The funding application for the academic year 2008 is closed, but it will be open soon for the academic year 2009.

Postgraduate study is based around research themes in Applied Probability, Bayesian Modelling and Analysis, Behavioural Biology, Graphical Modelling, Monte Carlo, Multiscale Methods, Nonparametric Regression, Optimisation Under Uncertainty, Statistical Bioinformatics, Statistical Signal Processing, Time Series and Spatial Analysis. Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Programme for Postgraduate Student at University of Auckland- New Zealand

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Programme (JSP) was established in April 1988 with funding from the Government of Japan. It is intended to provide an opportunity to fully qualified citizens of ADB developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related areas to attend academic institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. ADB-JSP enrolls about 300 students annually in 20 academic institutions located in 10 countries within the region.

University of Auckland is one of institutions participating in this ADB-JSP scholarship program.

SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION
The ADB-JSP provides full scholarships for one to two years.

The scholarship is for one year with an extension to the second year of study, as appropriate, which shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by the institute. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years for masters and doctorate programs.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

1. A national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).
2. Gained admission to an approved post graduate course in any of the participating academic institutions. (University of Auckland )
3. A bachelor`s degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.
4. At least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience
5. Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.
6. Not more than 35 years old at the time of application.
7. In good health.
8. Should agree to return to his/her home county after completion of studies under the Program.
9. Staff of participating academic institutions are not eligible for the Scholarship.
10. Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship.
11. Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of the other international organizations are not eligible for the Scholarship.
12. Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for the Scholarship.

Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

The Scholarship Program and the Fellowships Program are vehicles for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the developing world. The Programs provide opportunities for graduate studies leading to master's degree in development-related fields for mid-career professionals from the World Bank member countries, eligible to borrow. WBI supplements its training programs through the management of the following two programs:
