The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.
Geographic Scope
The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches, affiliates or other AKDN agencies which can help with processing applications and interviewing applicants. At present, these are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgystan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.
Selection Criteria
The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.
Age Limit
Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.
Financial Assistance
The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.
Loan Conditions
Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.
Application Procedures
The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained, or to the address indicated on the front of the form. They should not be sent to Geneva. The deadline for submission of applications is March 31, although in certain countries internal deadlines may be earlier.
Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Interview reports are sent with the applications to Geneva for the final selection.
The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.

The EMSEP Consortium Scholarship, Finland
The EMSEP consortium offers scholarships for both European and non-European students. The scholarships are funded by the European Commission and will be awarded to the best students on a competitive basis. The scholarships cover tuition fees for the whole study period of two years and provide also funding for living expenses.

- Erasmus Mundus scholarships are awarded exclusively for full-time enrollment in the master's programme.
- Scholarship candidates must obtain a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent level of education, in accordance with their national legislation and practices, latest in June 2014.
- Individuals who have already benefited from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship are not eligible for a second Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
- Students benefiting from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
- A student applying for the Category A scholarship cannot be resident or have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of the EU/EEA countries.
- The maximum number of Erasmus Mundus Masters programmes for which students can apply is 3. In the eventual case that a student applies to more than three Erasmus Mundus programmes he/she will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
- According to the European Commission rules, no more than 2 of the students selected for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship should have the same nationality. This means that the scholarships will also be allocated on the basis of nationality

Mobility grants for Academic Scholars - Finland
Mobility grants for academic scholars
The MSc European Forestry consortium invites talented academics with a post-graduate degree to carry out research and teaching assignments in MSc European Forestry Consortium or Partnership universities*). Scholars are considered established teachers and researchers. Scholar mobility grants cannot be given to master's students.
Scholar grants can be awarded to
- non-European academics to visit MSc European Forestry Consortium universities, and
- faculty members of the MSc European Forestry Consortium universities to visit either Northwest A&F University in China or Federal University of Paraná in Brazil.
The prospective scholars are expected to bring concrete added value to the MSc EF programme. This can be done for example through teaching specific classes, leading and participating in seminars or workshops, monitoring and tutoring student/research project activities, participating in thesis reviews, preparing teaching modules, etc.
Scholars are also expected to contribute, after their scholarly activities, to the promotion and dissemination of the Erasmus Mundus Programme in general and the MSc European Forestry in particular in the scholar's home university and country.
applying for the scholar mobility grant
The call for applicants is open annually during 1 March - 30 April. All the applicants are expected to complete their intended scholarly visit(s) during the following academic year.
Erasmus Mundus scholar mobility grant is 1,200 euro per week and the scholar grants can be applied for 2-, 4- and 6-week visits. Scholars are encouraged to visit at least two or more consortium universities and the scholarly work can be broken into two or more separate visits. Scholar grant is intended to cover all the costs that the scholar may incur, there is no separate funding to cover travel expenses, accommodation, salary for teaching, etc. Scholars have to provide their own insurance cover.

CIMO scholarships for Studies in Finland
CIMO has a number of scholarship programmes for Doctoral level studies and research at Finnish universities. They are targeted at all academic fields, with the exception of the scholarships for advanced-level degree students of the Finnish language, which are specific to that particular field.

Hanken International Master's Student Scholarship in Finland
Hanken offers a limited number of scholarships for international master's degree students. The scholarship amount is EUR 6000 per year for two years (EUR 12 000 in total). In order to be eligible for a scholarship, an applicant has to fulfill all of the following criteria:
- the applicant should have foreign (non-Finnish) citizenship
- the applicant's permanent residence should be outside Finland at the time of application
- the applicant's previous degree should be from a non-Finnish higher education institution (applicants currently studying at a Finnish higher education institution are not eligible for a scholarship)
- the applicant should move to Finland in order to study at Hanken
- the applicant should not be entiteld to student financial aid through the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA)
The scholarship application is submitted at the same time as the application for admission to the chosen Master's Degree Programme at Hanken. There will be a specific question regarding the scholarship on the application form and therefore no separate application is needed.
The scholarship is paid in four installments of EUR 1500 during the first year and in two installments of EUR 3000 during the second year. In order to recieve the first installment the student must have completed at least 6 credits after the first exam week. The second installment is paid if the student has completed at least 22 credits in total after the second exam week. The third installment is paid after the third exam week if the student has completed at least 36 credits in total and the fourth installment after the fourth exam week if the student has completed at least 52 credits in total.
The first installment of the second year is paid after the second exam week if the student has completed at least 78 credits in total. The final installment will be paid if the student has completed his or her master's degree by the first graduation day of the following academic year.
Scholarships are awarded in order of merit and the selection criteria are the same as for admission to the Master's Degree Programmes (academic performance, GMAT/GRE test score and motivation). Scholarship applicants will be notified about the outcome of the selection at the same time as the admission results are released. Scholarship recipients will receive more detailed information with their admission package.
