PhD Fellowships in Chemistry and Biochemistry Ruhr-Universität Bochum-Germany

The Faculty of Chemistry at RUB offers 8 fully-funded PhD fellowships, starting April 2006. These are financed by the European Commission unter Framework Programme 6, Marie Curie Actions for Early Stage Research Training (EST).

We are seeking applications from students who will be able to commence their research studies from April or October 2006 onwards. Applicants will preferably hold an M. Sc. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physics, Material Science or any related subject.

Application and Selection Process

Requirements
Fellowships will be granted as employment contracts and include an annual travel allowance as well as a one-off carreer exploratory award. Net salary after tax and social contributions will be approx. 16'000 Euros per annum.

Students are expected to arrive as early as April 2006 with the remainder joining during the following 6 months, but no later than October 2006.

The selection of candidates will be made on the basis of aptitude to carry research projects, potential for excellence and scientific quality. Applicants who wish to be considered for INTCHEM projects must submit their application to the Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This includes:

Selection Process
Incomming applications will be assessed on a contiunous basis. Preselected canditates will be invited for interview to Bochum.

International Doctoral Scholarships in Information and Comunication: Italy

The Doctorate program is centered around three main areas of research, namely: Computer Science, Telecommunications and Electronics. The school publishes two calls per year, roughly speakup in the periods December-February and May-June. The last call for the Academic year 2006/2007 announces 12 positions, of which 8 have also attached a grant.

PhD scholarships in Finance- Melbourne, Australia

The Melbourne Finance Guarantee

Students studying full-time toward a PhD in Finance at the University of Melbourne, Australia are guaranteed a minimum living stipend of A$18,660 (2006) per year. For international students, the Department of Finance also guarantees the payment of their University of Melbourne PhD tuition fees (A$23,520 per year in 2006). Tuition fees for Australian and New Zealand students, or permanent residents, are funded by the Commonwealth of Australia. The guarantee is for the normal three year period of the PhD degree but may be extended for an additional year. Terms and conditions apply.

The guarantee means that if we accept you as PhD student your finances are secure.

You do not have to apply for these scholarships. The Department of Finance submits an application on your behalf.

• The Melbourne Research Scholarship and the Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship are highly competitive university wide scholarships awarded on entrance into a PhD. Students accepted for admission into the PhD program in Finance are automatically entered into the competition for these scholarships. Currently, successful candidates for these scholarships must have at least an 84.5 (2005) percent average (University of Melbourne equivalent) in the last two years of coursework undertaken.
• The Faculty of Economics and Commerce Fee Remission Scholarship is also a competitive scholarship awarded to PhD students. PhD students in Accounting and Business Information Systems, Actuarial Science, Economics and Management compete with Finance PhD students for this Scholarship. To be considered, a PhD candidate must have an average of at least 80 percent (University of Melbourne equivalent).
• The Department of Finance offers substantial funding including Australian Finance PhD Scholarship, Melbourne Finance Scholarship and Finance PhD Assistantship.

The PhD program in Finance begins in March, as the academic year at The University of Melbourne runs from March through November.
In general, we do not permit mid-year entry (July) into the program.

We are now considering applications for the 2007 program, which begins Feb 27, 2007.

Master Scholarships at University of Liverpool-UK

A number of Faculty of Engineering International MSc(Eng) Scholarships are available for academically strong International students who wish to pursue full-time studies leading towards the award of an MSc(Eng) degree in engineering at the University of Liverpool. The amount offered by each scholarship is £1,000. Only high calibre International applicants who meet the conditions specified below will be considered for a scholarship. Successful applicants for the scholarship will be notified in writing shortly after proof of their qualifications have been received. Scholarship Terms and Conditions Scholarships are for international students who start their studies in September 2006 and pay the full overseas tuition fees (£10500 in 2005/06; slightly higher for 2006/07). A completed scholarship application form must arrive at the address indicated on the form no later than 30 July 2006. Candidates must achieve a good first class honours degree or an equivalent overseas qualification in a relevant subject area (engineering or scientific subjects) and the application must be supported by good references. The grades required for the award of a scholarship may vary depending on the MSc(Eng) programme. Candidates whose first degree is not from an English speaking country must also obtain one of the following (other equivalent qualifications may be considered): (i) paper based TOEFL 570 plus Test of Written English 5.0 (ii) computer based TOEFL 230 (iii) IELTS 6.0 Successful registered candidates will receive £400 around week four of the first semester, a further £400 after completion of the second semester examinations with minimum overall grade ‘B’ (i.e. ? 60% average) and £200 on obtaining a minimum grade ‘B’ in the MSc(Eng) dissertation. Scholarships awarded for September 2006 entry are not deferrable to the following year. The decisions made by the scholarship awarding body in each Department will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

PhD scholarships in Economics and Business: Universiteit van Amsterdam

This will be a PhD position within the VICI project on ‘License Auctions’. In the last decade, governments around the world have started to employ auctions to assign licences for scarce market positions. License auctions differ fundamentally from auctions for normal goods (art, flowers, houses, etc.) in that they can have a profound effect on the organization of the market for which the licenses are sold. The project is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The PhD student will be based at the UvA (Prof. Theo Offerman and Dr Sander Onderstal) and will have the opportunity to visit Caltech (Prof. Jacob Goeree).

Tasks
The PhD student will use game theoretic tools to investigate various aspects of license auctions, that is, their revenue and efficiency properties as well as how they affect industry structure. He or she will also compare, by means of laboratory experiments, the performance of different license auctions.

• MSc (or equivalent) in Economics or a related field • strong background in game theory • background in auction theory • experience with experimental economics and statistical packages • proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Appointment
The PhD student will be appointed in the Department of Economics. The position will initially be for twelve months, to be extended to a maximum of four years (in total). The gross monthly salary will be € 1,933 in the first year, increasing to € 2,472 in the fourth year. There will also be an 8% holiday allowance.
