This situation fosters research interest in distributed cryptographic protocols and their implementation aspects.
The Horst-Görtz-Institute ( www.hgi.rub.de ) is Germany largest academic research institute for IT security covering all aspects of the field from mathematical cryptography to implementations. The chair for network and data security ( www.nds.rub.de ) is currently involved in the following research fields:
* group based cryptography (group key agreement, formal models for group security, group signatures),
* digital content protection (DRM, broadcast encryption),
* XML and WS security (XMaiL project, browser-based cryptographic protocols), and
* technical protections against phishing and pharming ( www.a-i3.org ).
This PhD position is intended to strengthen our research in group based cryptography. Applicants should have excellent knowledge in modern cryptography and good knowledge in at least one of the following fields:
* key agreement protocols for groups,
* group signatures,
* formal models for cryptographic protocols.
In order to actively participate in the research group, applicants should have basic knowledge and interest in Internet security, World Wide Web technology and XML.
Qualification: university diploma in computer science, mathematics, or electrical engineering.
Teaching load: 4 hours per week on average during the teaching term; tutorials, seminars, or independent instruction.

We offer a Ph.D.-student position in the Solid State Physics group (SSP) of the University of Twente.
The research of SSP is an integral part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. Well-defined morphological patterns and functional patterned molecular coatings will be studied to improve control of the wettability of surfaces. Both the macroscopic and microscopic features of such structures and their collaborative effects will be studied. The molecular coatings for wetting control will be applied by two different techniques, microcontact printing and shadow-mask evaporation. Both the influence of the length scale and the anisotropy of the patterns on the macroscopic wettability are of interest. The combination of length scales in the micron range with those in the nanometer range is promising for gaining improved wettability control, especially in gradient patterned surfaces. Nanometer sized structure will be implemented by means of ion beam induced erosion, both in 0D (dots) and 1D (stripes).
This project aims at a fundamental investigation of the interrelationships between roughness and functional coating. The laboratory scale experiments will be performed with mainly optical tools (ADSA-P and interference microscopy), combined with high-resolution microscopy (AFM and possibly LEEM). The findings are thought to be relevant for application in high-tech printing technology.

No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by CIMO.

Headlines from the brochure NEW There are a number of important changes compared to last year: Content Submission and handling of applications International Courses (ICP) and 15 ICPs and 6 ITPs VLIR finances 15 International Courses (ICPs) organised by the Flemish universities. These courses are master programmes, lasting one or two academic years, all of which lead to a master’s degree. They focus on specific problems of developing countries. The main target group for the courses are students from developing countries, although the courses can also be attended by Belgian students or students from other countries. The ICPs aim to train people from the South with a responsible position in civil society (at a university, school, NGO, ministry, etc) in such a way that the knowledge that they acquire is disseminated and applied in the home institution and country of origin. VLIR also finances International Training Programmes (ITPs) organised by Flemish universities and one university college. ITPs are short-term training programmes whose main focus is transferring skills rather than knowledge. The International Training Programmes are designed for people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience. Knowledge and skills are transferred through the ITPs, and the possibility for cooperation and networking is created. VLIR is responsible for the offer of ICPs and ITPs. It provides funds to the organising Flemish universities and also provides a number of scholarships for each programme.
