PhD Studentship Institute of Petroleum Engineering -UK

The Intelligent Well systems Technology group is looking for a PhD student to work in the area of modelling and evaluation of advanced downhole hardware used in hydrocarbon production. The studentship is available to UK/EU/Overseas candidates. It includes fees and an appropriate stipend. The Institute is committed to equality of opportunity.

The successful candidate will be involved in development of software tools for optimising the operation of downhole equipment. This will be done through assessing efficiency of various optimization algorithms with respect to problem of optimal settings for interval control valves and fine tuning of the best algorithms. The group is funded by a number of Upstream Oil Industry operating and service companies. They evaluate the progress of the work via regular meetings held in Edinburgh at four monthly intervals. Applicants will typically already be in possession of a MSc. degree in Mathematics or Physics with an outstanding academic or research record. Familiarity with the MATLAB and/or Simulink computing environments, knowledge of Artificial Intelligence will be an advantage, as will be previous practical experience in the optimization of industrial processes. A Petroleum Engineering background will also be useful, but is not essential since suitable training course can be provided as required.

To apply please send CV, academic records and a completed application form to Ms Anne Mathers anne.mathers@pet.hw.ac.uk. All other enquires should be sent to Dr. David Davies david.davies@pet.hw.ac.uk.

*Closing Date for Applications: 15th December 2006*

Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program

The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level study leading to a masters or doctoral degree. Fellows are selected from countries and territories in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Russia, where the Ford Foundation maintains active overseas programs. U.S. nationals are not eligible, although Fellows may study in the United States.

Fellows are chosen on the basis of their leadership potential and commitment to community or national service, as well as for academic excellence. Fellows may enroll in masters or doctoral programs and may pursue any academic discipline or field of study that is consistent with the interests and goals of the Ford Foundation. The Foundation currently works in thirteen fields to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.
Once selected, Ford Foundation International Fellows may enroll in an appropriate university program anywhere in the world, including their country of residence. The program provides placement assistance to those Fellows not yet admitted to graduate school.

IFP support also enables Fellows to undertake short-term language study and training in research and computer skills prior to graduate school enrollment. In addition, new Fellows attend orientation sessions, while current Fellows actively participate in learning and discussion activities designed to create information and exchange networks among Ford Foundation IFP Fellows worldwide. Finally, the program encourages IFP alumni to maintain contact with the program after completing the fellowships to help them remain current in their respective fields through the expanding Ford Foundation IFP network.

Because local requirements vary widely among IFP countries, applicants should carefully follow the specific application guidelines provided by the relevant IFP International Partner organizations, including deadlines for the submission of applications.

PhD Student, McGill University, Canada

Institution/Organization: McGill University
Department: School of Communication Sciences & Disorders
Level: PhD
Duties: Research
Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Neurolinguistics; Pragmatics
Emotional communication

Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship available in the Neuropragmatics and Emotion Lab (www.mcgill.ca/pell_lab) at McGill University beginning September, 2007.

The appropriate student will share general research interests with members of the lab which touch on the communication of emotion or attitudes in the human voice and/or through spoken language. The recipient will be expected to apply and register for a PhD in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at McGill University (Montréal, Canada) and will be supervised by Dr. Marc Pell.

Applicants must possess a first-class honours degree (minimum Bachelor-level equivalent) in Linguistics, Psychology, Communication Disorders, or a related discipline, preferrably with courses in psycho/neuro-linguistics. The specific research focus should be developed by the student but will probably centre on defining acoustic, perceptual, and/or neuro-cognitive components for understanding or expressing emotive qualities in speech during natural communication; disorders of emotive communication following acquired brain damage; or the influences of emotion and affect on normal and/or disordered language processing.

Funding is for a maximum of three years and will consist of an annual stipend of CAD $20,000 plus support for presenting work at research meetings.

As a first step, please register your interest to compete for the studentship by sending your CV and a detailed cover letter describing your research interests and academic goals to:
Dr. Marc Pell
McGill University, SCSD

PhD in Morphogenesis-EMBL Heidelberg, Germany

European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg, Germany.

The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe maintains a cylindrical shape by alternating polarized growth at the cell ends with divisions in the middle. The localized growth is established during interphase by bundles of microtubules that deposit growth factors specifically at cell ends. The bundles are also attached to the nucleus, keeping it near the cell-center. This is because bundles are anti-parallel, align along the main cell axis and transmit the microtubule polymerization forces from both sides to the nucleus. We have modelled the nucleus and microtubules with simulated Langevin dynamics in three dimensions. We could match most of the experimentally measured microtubule features, using a fix cylindrical cell shape.

We propose now to study how S. pombe determines its shape. The student will have to extend the existing model to include abitrary convex shapes. He/her will have to model the transport and deposition of growth factors by the microtubules, and their effects on cell growth. The work will be done in collaboration with Damian Brunner (EMBL). Together, we will test the model using fluorescence recordings of both wild type and mutant cells followed on multiple generations. The proposed work is a systems' level approach of morphogenesis in a simple cell, and the student will combine experiments and theory during his/her PhD.

Applicants with prior training in Physics, Mathematics, I.T. or engineering, and a willingness to explore the opportunities offered in Biology are encouraged to apply. EMBL is a renowned international research laboratory, with more than 60 nationalities represented. The working language is English.

The deadline for application is November 1st, 2006.
