We offer a Ph.D.-student position in the Solid State Physics group (SSP) of the
University of Twente.
The research of SSP is an integral part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. Well-defined morphological patterns and functional patterned molecular coatings will be studied to improve control of the wettability of surfaces. Both the macroscopic and microscopic features of such structures and their collaborative effects will be studied. The molecular coatings for wetting control will be applied by two different techniques, microcontact printing and shadow-mask evaporation. Both the influence of the length scale and the anisotropy of the patterns on the macroscopic wettability are of interest. The combination of length scales in the micron range with those in the nanometer range is promising for gaining improved wettability control, especially in gradient patterned surfaces. Nanometer sized structure will be implemented by means of ion beam induced erosion, both in 0D (dots) and 1D (stripes).
This project aims at a fundamental investigation of the interrelationships between roughness and functional coating. The laboratory scale experiments will be performed with mainly optical tools (ADSA-P and interference microscopy), combined with high-resolution microscopy (AFM and possibly LEEM). The findings are thought to be relevant for application in high-tech printing technology.

We offer an interesting temporary research position in a dynamic, interdisciplinary and international environment. You will be appointed for a period of one year, with an assessment within one year. A positive assessment will secure the continuation of the appointment for another three years. The salary starts at €1.933,- gross per month increasing to €2.472,- gross per month in the fourth year. PhD students are expected to complete their research with a thesis. Applications are reviewed and final selections decided by panels composed of practitioners and scholars from various fields of work and study. The level and duration of awards are determined as part of the selection process. Ford Foundation staff and their family members may not serve on selection panels and are not eligible to apply for IFP awards. Members of selection committees, staff of the organizations managing the program in the various regions, and their family members are also ineligible for IFP awards.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship available in the Neuropragmatics and Emotion Lab (www.mcgill.ca/pell_lab) at McGill University beginning September, 2007.
The appropriate student will share general research interests with members of the lab which touch on the communication of emotion or attitudes in the human voice and/or through spoken language. The recipient will be expected to apply and register for a PhD in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at McGill University (Montréal, Canada) and will be supervised by Dr. Marc Pell.
Applicants must possess a first-class honours degree (minimum Bachelor-level equivalent) in Linguistics, Psychology, Communication Disorders, or a related discipline, preferrably with courses in psycho/neuro-linguistics. The specific research focus should be developed by the student but will probably centre on defining acoustic, perceptual, and/or neuro-cognitive components for understanding or expressing emotive qualities in speech during natural communication; disorders of emotive communication following acquired brain damage; or the influences of emotion and affect on normal and/or disordered language processing.
Funding is for a maximum of three years and will consist of an annual stipend of CAD $20,000 plus support for presenting work at research meetings.
