The Irish Research Council’s Employment Based Postgraduate Programme

The Irish Research Council’s Employment Based Postgraduate Programme is a new and exciting initiative providing postgraduate researchers with an employment-focused educational experience. More specifically, the Programme offers researchers the opportunity to undertake a Master's or PhD degree while employed by a private company or public organisation based in the Republic of Ireland.

The overall objectives of the Employment Based Postgraduate Programme are to:

1. provide researchers at Master's and PhD level with an invaluable insight into the commercial aspects of research and innovation.
2. facilitate research collaboration, knowledge transfer and networking between Irish-based private businesses/public bodies and researchers at Irish Higher Education Instiutions.

  • The programme is open to all research disciplines.

  • Applications will be accepted from candidates who have secured the support of an eligible Irish Higher Education Institution and an Irish-based private company or public organisation (Employment Partner).

  • Successful applicants will be registered as postgraduate researchers in the Higher Education Institution but will be directly employed by the Employment Partner for the duration of their award.

  • While the award will be made to an individual researcher, applications must include an Irish Higher Education Institution and any private company or public organisation based in the Republic of Ireland.

  • The Programme is designed to enhance the skills and long-term career development prospects of funded researchers through exposure to academia, the private and public sectors and other socio-economic actors, thus extending the traditional postgraduate research setting and eliminating cultural and other barriers to mobility.

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship - Scholarships for Woman

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship is more than a fellowship that helped me financially while conducting my research.  I met so many wonderful women in all walks of life that are truly engaged in helping women to advance and succeed, the spirit of which I will appreciate for a long time to come."

~ Peihua Jing, China, Amelia Earhart Fellow, 2002 & 2005

Today, women remain a distinct minority in science and engineering, representing approximately 10 percent of professionals in these fields. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship program helps talented women, pursuing advanced studies in the typically male-dominated fields of aerospace-related sciences and engineering, achieve their educational goals. The Fellowship enables these women to invest in state-of-the-art computers to conduct their research, purchase expensive books and resource materials, and participate in specialized studies around the globe. Amelia Earhart Fellows have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists, business owners, heads of companies, even Secretary of the US Air Force.

Since the program's inception, Zonta has awarded 1,403 Amelia Earhart Fellowships, totaling US$8.3 million, to women from 68 countries.

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION
Established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering. The Fellowship of US$10,000, awarded to 35 Fellows around the globe each year, may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.

ELIGIBILITY
Women of any nationality pursuing a Ph.D./doctoral degree who demonstrate a superior academic record in the field of aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering are eligible. Please note that post-doctoral research programs are not eligible for the Fellowship. Members and employees of Zonta International or the Zonta International Foundation are also not eligible to apply for the Fellowship. Current fellows may apply to renew the Fellowship for a second year and will undergo the same application and evaluation procedures as first-time applicants. Applicants must be registered in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program when funds are received in September and will not graduate before April 2015.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Committee reviews the applications and recommends recipients to the Zonta International Board of Directors. All applicants will be notified of their status by the end of April.

DEADLINE
Applications for the 2014 Fellowships must be received or post-marked by 15 November 2013 to be considered. Applications that are incomplete or late due to postal delays will not be considered. For questions, please contact programs@zonta.org.
