Program focus: To increase understanding of neurodegenerative diseases BiND ESR programme focuses on training by research on:

  1. identifying novel molecular pathways mediating neurodegeneration and repair
  2. developing novel in vitro and in vivo models of human neurodegenerative disease,
  3. identifying surrogate markers that predict the neurodegenerative process and its outcome, and
  4. searching for novel gene mutations linked to human neurodegenerative diseases and their function in the neurodegenerative process.

We aim at providing first-class training for our PhD fellows, serving as a source of experts for academic research, clinic, and industry, and emphasizing international connections and mobility.

Program includes 2-3 courses, seminar series, summer schools, international conferences annually, as well as weekly laboratory meetings and day-to-day personal supervising.

PhD Scholarships-University of Vienna-Austria

University of Vienna, Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, in cooperation with the Faculties of Life Sciences, Mathematics, Philosophy/Education and Physics

The Doctoral Program ("Initiativkolleg"-IK) "Naturwissenschaften im historischen Kontext/The Sciences in Historical Context" announces the award of up to 12 doctoral student positions beginning 1 October 2006.

For the first time the University of Vienna offers a Ph.D. program in this field, to be completed in six semesters. The aims of the program are: to offer a structured interdisciplinary curriculum in History and Philosophy of Science with the collaboration of international visitors, and to make possible the joint supervision of dissertations by historians/historians of science and natural scientists/mathematicians.

Participation in the study program is required; members of the IK must therefore reside continuously in Vienna. Participation in the annual "Vienna International Summer University" in the second half of July is also part of the program. Positions are funded for three years. Recipients are employed half time (20 hours/week) at the University of Vienna; this includes up to 10 hours/week in teaching and research tasks agreed individually. The total annual salary of 14,000 Euros is paid out in 14 instalments. Health and social insurance will be covered by the University. Tuition exemption, additional support for students with children, and travel funding for research or conferences are included.

Employment requirements: Completed advanced degree (Magister/Diplom/Master, in exceptional cases a relevant BA/BSc) in History, History or History and Philosophy of Science, a natural science or Mathematics.

Application procedure:
The following documents should be submitted as part of an application for a studentship in the IK "The Sciences in Historical Context":
- A brief cover letter stating the reasons for applying
- Curriculum vitae
- Documentation of previous studies and copies of all university degrees received
- An expose of the proposed dissertation project (maximum 5 pages) with bibliography (maximum one page)
- Names of two references (with institutional affiliation and address)

In addition, a letter of recommendation from one of the named references (preferably the advisor of the latest degree thesis) should be sent separately by the deadline date either by Email or post.

Students will be admitted at the beginning of the winter semester (1 October 2006), in exceptional cases at the beginning of the spring semester (1 March 2007). Admissions will be announced during the first week of July 2006.

Such a designation presents an unparalleled research opportunity to analyse the potential socio-economic and regenerative effects upon the City and its hinterland.
This position would suit those from a social science background with a 2:1 grade or higher. A postgraduate qualification would be an advantage.

This project will investigate the practice of corporate governance and its relationship to matters of corporate strategy, structure and change. The research will focus on the UK context, with some possibilities for a regional focus.
This position would suit applicants with social science and/or organisational-managerial studies qualifications at 2:1 grade or higher. A postgraduate qualification would be an advantage as would a demonstrable interest in developing novel approaches to qualitative research.

PhD Fellowships in Chemistry and Biochemistry Ruhr-Universität Bochum-Germany

The Faculty of Chemistry at RUB offers 8 fully-funded PhD fellowships, starting April 2006. These are financed by the European Commission unter Framework Programme 6, Marie Curie Actions for Early Stage Research Training (EST).

We are seeking applications from students who will be able to commence their research studies from April or October 2006 onwards. Applicants will preferably hold an M. Sc. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physics, Material Science or any related subject.

Application and Selection Process

Requirements
Fellowships will be granted as employment contracts and include an annual travel allowance as well as a one-off carreer exploratory award. Net salary after tax and social contributions will be approx. 16'000 Euros per annum.

Students are expected to arrive as early as April 2006 with the remainder joining during the following 6 months, but no later than October 2006.

The selection of candidates will be made on the basis of aptitude to carry research projects, potential for excellence and scientific quality. Applicants who wish to be considered for INTCHEM projects must submit their application to the Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This includes:

The Doctorate program is centered around three main areas of research, namely: Computer Science, Telecommunications and Electronics.
