Masters and PhD Scholarships at The Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment ( JGSEE ) - Thailand

JGSEE ThailandThe Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment ( JGSEE )
is an autonomous graduate school instituted under the jurisdiction of the Council of the King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi . It was established in 1998 for the purpose of implementing the Postgraduate Education and Research in Science and Technology Development Project of the Commission on Higher Education (CHE), which aims to strength postgraduate education and research as a means of building a strong foundation for research and development in science and technology, and to help support Thailand's economic competitiveness. The School receives funding from the Thai government through the CHE - ADB Higher Education Development Project and the Energy Conservation Promotion Fund of the Ministry of Energy.

Scholarships and PhD Positions in Environmental Geochemistry at Eawag

OverviewEawag equatic reserch swiss
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally active research institute within the domain of the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Science and Technology). It is committed to the ecologically, economically and socially responsible management of water.

Within the department of Water Resources and Drinking Water, the group Molecular Envi-ronmental Geochemistry has a vacancy for a PhD Student in Environmental Geochemistry.

The subject of the doctoral thesis will be “Iron(III) precipitates formed by iron(II) oxida-tion in natural waters: Structure, reactivity and impact on arsenic”.

Iron precipitation plays an important biogeochemical role and influences water quality in many natural systems. Iron precipitation is also widely used for the treatment of wastewater and the purification of drinking water, for example to remove arsenic.

The goal of this project is to advance the current state of knowledge regarding the structure and reactivity of iron precipitates forming under a variety of chemical conditions as a basis for improved water resources management. Arsenic represents a widespread contaminant of water resources and its co-transformation with iron will therefore be considered in this study. The work is predominantly laboratory-based and involves the use of state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation. Synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and electron microscopy will mainly be used for the characterization of iron precipitates and arsenic speciation.

Scholarship for PhD in 2nd Generation Biofuel Production from Waste Resources in Ghana at DTU Denmark

biofuels productionOverview
The NRG Programme at Risø DTU offers a three years PhD scholarship starting in November 2010.

The Project
The project will develop sustainable technologies for production of 2nd generation biofuels (biogas, bioethanol and biodiesel) from lignocellulosic waste material in developing countries in Africa. In addition the main is to utilize residuals from the bioenergy production as fertilizer to improving soil fertility and food security. The suggested technologies will make it possible to switch from a society depending more and more on fossil energy to a modern biomass based society. Ghana will be used as a model country.

The PhD will map and select waste resources found in Ghana that are relevant for production of biofuel and the resources will be characterized. The waste will be subject to pre-treatment such as silage treatment, hydrothermal treatment and maceration and thereafter be converted to biofuel in the laboratory. Various conversion technologies shall be tested: ethanol production, biogas and biodiesel. Based on the results different concepts for combined bioethanol, biogas and biodiesel will be developed. Codigestion concepts for an optimized biogas production will also be tested as well as innovative reactor setups will be tested. Finally an evaluation of most suitable biofuel technology will and a sustainability assessment will be carried out.
