The NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) - Australia

The aim of the NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) scheme is to support outstanding health and medical graduates early in their career so that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and to develop a capacity for original independent research within Australia. This is usually achieved by NHMRC funding successful applicants to attain a research based postgraduate degree, which may be a PhD, a PhD equivalent degree, or Masters Degree.

Changes to the Postgraduate Scholarship scheme for 2013

  • The requirement for applicants to be enrolled in a PhD program for Dora Lush Biomedical Research Postgraduate Scholarship has been removed; and the scoring matrix has been updated;

  • Medical/Dental category has been re-named the Clinical Research Postgraduate Scholarship to align with NHMRC descriptors of broad research areas;

  • Public Health and Primary Health categories have been combined and renamed to Public Health and Health Services Research Postgraduate Scholarship;

  • MBBS/PhD applicants are no longer to apply in the Dora Lush Biomedical Research Postgraduate Scholarship category but may apply in the Clinical Research Postgraduate Research Scholarship category;

  • A new Part-Time Research Postgraduate Scholarship category has been introduced (conditions apply); and

  • Clarification of the assessment of applicants who are bioinformaticians and/or biostatisticians has been provided.
